Chaurasia. Although I never had occasion to meet him personally, we knew each other intimately through a rich correspondence, and had developed a great deal of mutual respect. This book, produced with a great deal of labour by Dr. Chaurasia, has been received by the student community with unparalled enthusiasm; and its popularity amongst those for whom it was meant is Dr. Chaurasia’s real memorial. When approached by the publishers to edit the book for a second edition. I agreed mainly out of my deep regard for the scholarship and personality of Dr. Chaurasia. This is my homage to him. In revising the book its basic pattern has not been touched. However, a large number of alterations have been made to increase readability and comprehensibility. Throughout the text the language has been altered to give the text greater flow. Many sections have been rewritten. The sequence of chapters has been altered to make it more rational. In each part the section on osteology is placed first as it needs to be read before proceeding with other chapters. However, the attachments on bones are given separately so that these can be omitted by beginners. Extensive work has been done on the illustrations. The sizes of many figures that were too small or too large has been adjusted. All figures now have one uniform size of labelling. Many figures have been replaced with new ones. I am deeply obliged to Mr S.K. Jain of CBS publishers for extending his full cooperation in the preparation of this edition. In spite of my best efforts many imperfections are bound to remain.
