The mechanisms of metabolic impairment and the genesis of endothelial dysfunction in diabetes mellitus have been analyzed; the role of intercellular junctions of vascular endothelial cells to support vascular integrity and permeability barrier in norm and pathology has been shown. Data on involvement in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis on the background of diabetes mellitus of vascular smooth muscle cells, macrophages, platelets and erythrocytes are summarized.
