Annotation: Microbiology, at present, has become an exceptionally broad discipline encompassing fascinating areas of biological knowledge. Advances in this field are immense and have made this science quite interesting. ‘Microbial knowledge explosion5 during the recent past has made microbiology so extensive that it can not be accommodated within the framework of a text-book of limited space. Under these constrains, I have tried my best to prepare the book in such a way that it provides a balanced introduction to all major aspects of microbiology ranging from fundamentals to applied. I have also tried to give up-to-date information of the subject incorporating new approaches and ideas emerging and expanding rapidlyThe book consists of 24 Chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the subject matter and its historical landmarks to let the reader know how and when this discipline of science grew and prospered. Chapter 2 discusses at length the biological status of microorganisms with respect to all other organisms known. Chapter 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are devoted to microbial diversity with emphasis on morphotaxonomic details of different microbial groups. The processes of food procurement (nutrition), growth, metabolism, and transfer of genes to progeny (genetics) are covered in Chapters 8, 9, and 10. Chapter 11 deals with the availability of atmospheric nitrogen to plant by the work of nitrogen-fixing microorganisms (biological N9-fixation). Variety of commonly used instruments, chemicals and techniques in microbiological laboratories are accommoded in Chapter 12. Chapter 13 discusses the association of microbes with microbes and microbes with other organisms in their natural habitats. Recombinant DNA technology, a newly born discipline developed to tailor and manipulate heredity to the best of man’s advantage, is described at introductory level in Chapter 14.
