We pay special attention to the formation of practical skills in ophthalmology in students. The list of practical skills that will contribute to the formation of competencies of a general practitioner has been revised. If students are better skilled in ophthalmology competencies, they might be more confident in diagnosing and managing patients outside of the specialist eye care services, such as within the emergency department. This might lead to more rapid and appropriate management resulting in improved patient outcomes, satisfaction and throughput.
