Annotation: Die Verfasser halten es für notwendig, das ophthalmologische Schrifttum um ein deutschsprachiges, größeres Lehrbuch oder kleineres Handbuch zu vervollständigen. Es bringt wesentlich mehr als die vorhandenen Lehrbücher für Studierende und Nichtaugenärzte, hält sich aber gleichwohl in solchen Grenzen, daß es bei voller Wahrung der Wissenschaftlichkeit auch den Bedürfnissen des praktisch tätigen Augenarztes Rechnung trägt. Vor allem wendet es sich an den jungen Assistenten, an den künftigen Augenarzt. Ihm wird es Helfer bei der Ausbildung und Ratgeber bei späterer, eigenverantwortlicher Tätigkeit sein. Aus vielerlei Gründen war es dem Herausgeber nicht möglich, alle Kapitel in sinngemäßer Reihenfolge zu bringen. Es schieden z. B. mehrere Autoren aus, die sich zur Mitarbeit verpflichtet hatten. Von den Kollegen jedoch, die sich freundlicherweise bereit erklärten, die ausgefallenen Themen neu zu bearbeiten, konnte man die Manuskriptabgabe nicht zu dem anfangs geplanten Zeitpunkt erwarten. Auf Grund der zahlreichen Nachfragen und Anforderungen drängte jedoch die Zusammenstellung des ersten Bandes. Die Leser werden für diese besondere Situation um Verständnis gebeten. Eine gewisse Beschränkung des Stoffes und des Schriftturnverzeichnisses könnte möglicherweise Anlaß zur Kritik geben. Anregungen und Hinweise nehmen die Autoren dankbar entgegen. Dem Verlag gilt der Dank des Herausgebers und aller Autoren für die großzügige Förderung und Ausstattung des Werkes.
