Annotation: THE reception accorded to my Textbook of Ophthalmology has persuaded me that there is a need for its continuation in a second edition. The seven volumes of the Textbook took almost a quarter of a century to write, a period unfortunately longer than it might have been owing to the exigencies of war. The first four volumes have long been out of print—and intentionally so because they have long been out of date. It is to be remembered that the second volume was written before the sulphonamides were introduced ; the third before the antibiotics revolutionized the therapeutics of infective diseases ; both of them before the role of viruses in ocular disease was adequately appreciated ; the physiology of the eye of yesterday is unrecognizable when compared with that of today ; even the anatomy has been transformed by more elaborate optical and chemical methods of investigation and the advent of the electron microscope. The re-writing of the whole work if its comprehensive nature were to be retained would be an immense task occupying more time than I could reasonably expect to have at my disposal. Moreover, tomorrow will be different from today, and if a work such as this is to be of any lasting value it would seem to me desirable that a new edition be published at least every fifteen or twenty years ; fortunately, ophthalmology is no static science.

Annotation: THIS book forms a new edition of the section of anatomy in my Textbook of Ophthalmology. Its greater bulk is due partly to the fact that anatomy today is in no sense a dead subject but is rapidly growing, and partly because the text has been amplified in two respects. In the first place, I have paid considerable attention to the historical development of the subject ; apart from its great intrinsic interest, it cannot be denied that an appreciation of how our knowledge has evolved through the years not only makes its factual presentation a living story of triumphs and mistakes, but has a salutary effect in convincing the reader that what we accept today with apparent assurance will almost certainly be changed tomorrow. I have also stressed more than is perhaps usual the functional aspects of structure. In the Textbook, anatomy and physiology were contained within the same volume so that it was easy for the one to supplement the other ; but a treatise on structure alone with no indication of why it is so constituted is meaningless and lacks its essential interest

Annotation: THE combination of normal and abnormal development in one composite volume would seem to be logical since the significance of aberrations cannot be understood without a knowledge of the normal sequence of events, while, on the other hand, the complex story of embryology becomes intensely practical and full of human interest when correlated with the multitude of abnormalities which are so frequently seen in the clinic. So great is the number of these, however, that if they are to be adequately discussed, a single volume would become unmanageable by reason of its bulk; for ease of manipulation and also for ready reference, therefore, I have found it convenient to divide it into two parts. In some ways this is unfortunate, and for a complete understanding both should be read as one.
