MeSH-main:
ХУДОЖЕСТВЕННАЯ ЛИТЕРАТУРА -- FICTIONAL WORKS
Annotation: “Hearts of Three” by a well-known American writer Jack London (1876—1916) is a model of an adventure novel. Its plot is based on the adventures of a young New York millionaire, Francis Morgan, his friend and distant relative Henry and charming Leoncia — all of them are united by the search of Maya’s treasures and romantic love. Dangerous wanderings through the Cordilleras, mystical prophecies, mysterious caves where every step hides deadly danger, stockjobbing intrigues, the insidiousness of enemies, and the betrayal of some friends — this is the way which the heroes of the novel have to overcome. The novel is very easily read; it arouses belief in genuine friendship, true love, and such people’s virtues as honesty, courage, nobility, and self-sacrifice

    The Gentle Grafter [Text] / O.Henry. - Kyiv : Znannia, 2017. - 191 p. - (American Library). - ISBN 978-617-07-0458-0
UDC

Annotation: "The Gentle Grafter" is one of the best collections of the stories by the well-known American writer O. Henry (1862—1910). The stories are united by the through characters — companions Jeff Peters and Andy Tucker. Both of them earn their living by small-time roguery, exploiting such human vices as meanness, cupidity, credulity, foolishness and vanity. The wonder of it is that the main heroes are also endowed with some positive features: the devotion to friendship, the ability to love, the observation of a peculiar code of honor. Sometimes they take the bait of the more crafty "colleagues" which endows the collection with special color. The stories are well written, filled with irony, humor, and hints; they thrill the reader and arouse bright feelings

    The ransom of red chief and other stories [Text] / O.Henry. - Kyiv : Znannia, 2016. - 254 p. - (English Library). - ISBN 978-617-07-0277-7
UDC

Annotation: The proposed collection of literary works by O. Henry (William Sidney Porter, 1862—1910), besides the story “The Ransom of Red Chief” includes such masterpieces of his creative heritage as “The Indian Summer of Dry Valley Johnson” “A Blackjack Bargainer” "A Retrieved Reformation” and others. Many of them were screened more than once. Behind the alternation of adventures and situations, humor, irony or sarcasm, there expressively arise the author’s reflections on human being, their aspirations for love, kindness, and happiness. The author’s inexhaustible creative imagination strikes the reader. As a rule, his stories have a sudden ending. They enrapture and move, and what is most important, they always bear optimism and give hope

    Austen, Jane.
    Pride and Prejudice [Text] / J. Austen. - Kyiv : Znannia, 2015. - 382 p. - (English Library). - ISBN 978-617-07-0253-1
Title translation: Гордість та упередження

Annotation: “Pride and Prejudice” is the best known novel of the famous British writer Jane Austen (1775—1817). Amorous hearts every now and then easily get over social barriers but sometimes they fail skirting the walls of their own pride, natural misapprehensions or even prejudice. 21-year-old Jane Austen succeeded in revealing so masterly aspirations and disappointments, anxieties and feelings of enamoured Elizabeth and Mr Darcy that even today millions of readers of different generations admirably read her novel. It is notable for its touching romantic mood, light humour, psychologically exact portraits of its characters. If it were not for this book, there would be possibly neither “psychological” nor “chick-lit” novels, nor even feminist literature in general

    Chesterton, Gilbert Keith.
The Innocence of Father Brown [Text] / G. K. Chesterton. - Kyiv : Znannia, 2015. - (English Library)
Title translation: Смиренність отця Брауна
UDC

Annotation: “The Innocence of Father Brown” is a collection of stories by one of the most brilliant English writers of the beginning of the 20th century Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874—1936). The stories about Father Brown take the place of honour in the crime fiction and have won longstanding love of the readers of the world. Among other detective stories, they are remarkable for their depth of thought because the main hero of the stories is the priest who strives not only to take a criminal red-handed and clean a crime, but also to set him in the right way, to save a person’s soul. In spite of a religious component, the book is not congested with moralizing, but imbued with unique English humour. It is incredibly engrossing and contains everything for the readers of crime fiction to enjoy it

Annotation: “White Fang” is a novel of the distinguished American writer Jack London (1876—1916) which belongs to the Northern cycle of his works. It is a story of the wolf, White Fang by name, in whose veins there runs the dog’s blood. This circumstance makes his life impossible outside human society. In spite of the ferocity, meanness and treachery of the man, White Fang always remains faithful to him. The inner life of the animal, the motivation of his actions are described so pathetically as to move the reader to tears.
