Анотація: Since my publication of Textbook of Obstetrics about 5 years back, I have been pressed hard by my esteemed colleagues and the students all over the country and abroad to write a textbook on gynaecology of similar style to fill up the deficit. Initially, I was hesitant to proceed with the stupendous task but considering the fact that a compact, comprehensive and practical-oriented fundamental book in gynaecology is not available to the undergraduates, I have decided to comply with their request. The book has been written in a lucid language in author’s own style. Extensive diagrams, photographs, and flow-charts (schemes) have been depicted throughout the text to give clarity of the subject. Due attention has been paid to project the fundamental principles and practice of gynaecology. As such, more emphasis has been given on medical gynaecology. But for that, indications, limitations, and principles of techniques of operations have received adequate consideration. The book is thus made invaluable not only to the medical students but also the practising physicians and students of Nursing. The author wishes to acknowledge gratitude to his esteemed colleague Dr N. Chowdhury, MBBS, DGO, MO (Cal), for his contribution to the topic "Hormone Therapy in Gynaecological practice". Dr Santosh Kr. Paul, MBBS, DGO, MO (Cal), Prof. Dept of Obst. and Gynae., NRS Medical College, Calcutta, deserves full appreciation for his contribution in a lucid way to the topic "Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy in Gynaecology". The author has much pleasure in expressing grateful thanks to Dr Β Ν Chakrabarty, MBBS, DGO, MO (Cal), FRCOG (Eng) and Dr Κ Μ Gun, MBBS, DGO, MO (Cal), FRCOG (Eng), FRCS (Edin), FACS (USA), for their valued suggestions as and when required and their contribution of photographs to enrich the text. I gratefully record my thanks to Dr Subir Kumar Dutta, MBBS, DCP, MD (Path. & Bact.), Prof. Dept of Pathology and Bacteriology, University College of Medicine, Calcutta, for the microphotographs depicted throughout the text. Анотація: Medicine continues to attract the most bright and dedicated students in its rank, τ ο nurture these talented young minds, remains the greatest challenge to an academic clinician. There are many demands from a modern medical text book. It is expected to provide the high quality as well as the up-to-date knowledge in the field of medicine, knowing well that medical knowledge is constantly changing. Currently any knowledge and practice should base upon the best evidence available. Technologic explosion has made the present obstetric knowledge and practice significantly different compared to the past. Today, an obstetric student is expected to understand and interpret in addition to the fundamentals, Partographs (ch.12, 26, 34), Ultrasonographs (ch. 40), Fetal well-being in Pregnancy (ch. 11, 31) and in Labour (ch. 38), Counselling strategy (ch.10), Prenetal genetic diagnosis (ch. 11, 32), Psychological care (ch. 29) and also the legal and ethical issues related to these areas (ch. 39). Again the introduction of "core curricula" aims to impart the essential knowledge, skills and attitude within a limited time frame. Above all the author of this text (see the preface of the first edition) believed that, teaching and learning process should be free, easy and simple without any ambiguity or complexities. This sixth edition of D.C. Dutta’s widely acclaimed, comprehensive Text Book of Obstetrics has considered all the areas as discussed above. Each chapter has been thoroughly revised, updated and few rewritten to keep the students abreast of the most recent and relevant information. Evidence based treatment has been focussed wherever it is available. Numerous boxes, tables, flow-charts, line drawings, scans, radiographs, coloured photographs have been incorporated judiciously for the ease of understanding. The practical obstetrics (ch. 41), self assessment questionnaire, OSCE format is for oral and practical part of the examination. Core knowledge has been highlighted. Colour code helps to recognise the type of information they present. The key points, key concepts and summary at the end of an individual chapter, are for quick revision and recall without going through the text. Contents and index have been expanded for easy text reference. A list of up-to-date reviews and useful websites are included for enthusiastic readers who wish to seek more information and strive for excellence.
