Анотація: The Medical University of Warsaw is a school with a tradition dating back to the 19th century, and is the largest and one of the most prestigious medical universities in Poland. The University offers 11 majors and 3 specialized courses and provides schooling for more than 10,000 students, many of them foreigners. The scientific and academic personnel is recruited from among the leading Polish doctors and scientists.
The history of the University dates back to the beginning of the 19th century In 1809, an Academic and Medical Faculty was formed at the initiative of the member of the Education Chamber, Stanisław Staszic. The purpose was to teach Medical Sciences, Surgery and Pharmacy in order to provide a comprehensive education to all graduates. In 1815, the Kingdom of Poland was formed by the Russian authorities. On 19 November 1816, Tsar Alexander I consented to the foundation of the Royal University of Warsaw, comprising five faculties, including the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Medical Sciences as separate entities. In 1831, after the collapse of the November Uprising of 1830, the University was closed, like all other universities in Congress Poland. The Imperial and Royal College of Medicine and Surgery was established in 1857, and incorporated in 1862 into the newly-formed Main School of Warsaw, as the Faculty of Medicine. In 1869, pursuant to a Tsarist decree, the Main School was closed, replaced by the Imperial University of Warsaw, with Russian as an official language. The University of Warsaw was reinstated in 1915 Józef Polikarp Brudziński, paediatrician and neurologist, became the Rector of the revived University. At the same time, the Faculty of Preparation and Medicine was created, in 1916 converted to a separate Faculty of Medicine. In independent Poland, the restored University organized a separate entity to train pharmacists, from 1926 operating as the Faculty of Pharmacy During World War II, the Doctor Jan Zaorski Private Professional School for Auxiliary Medical Personnel ran clandestine courses. In 1949, a separate university was formed in Warsaw, known as the Doctors’ Academy, converted to the Medical Academy in 1950. This name was used for the next 58 years. In March 2008, the University returned to its historical roots, becoming the Medical University of Warsaw. This fact marks its real position and rank, and confirms the recognition of its academic level, medical services and high quality of scientific research
