Аннотация: In all its editions, this book has had two principal objectives, to be interesting and easily understood by the student and to be useful to the teacher by being up-to-date with respect to trends in the teaching of chemistry. This tradition served as a guide in planning this revision as well, and keeping it in mind, I have worked toward several specific goals. First, in view of the changing direction of the introductory chemistry course, I wished to provide an improved framework within which the instructor could emphasize the importance of descriptive chemistry without compromising the treatment of principles. Second, I wished to reduce the size of the book. As you know, chemistry textbooks have become enormous, which has added to their cost and bulk and has surely intimidated many incoming college students. And third, I wanted to improve further the explanations of concepts and to enhance the effectiveness of the text in developing problem-solving skills. As in the past, to meet these goals I have brought together my own thoughts, input from users of previous editions, as well as suggestions of reviewers. Those familiar with the fourth edition will notice that this has led to some significant changes in the flow of topics. In spite of this, care has been taken to write chapters in a way that their order of presentation can be changed easily
