Аннотация: It is the purpose of this work to reveal the reasons behind Stalin’s mass executions during the Great Purge in the Ukrainian city of Vinnytsia and the surrounding region. In an extensive introductory essay, the Editor provides the historical and political background that traces the practice of genocide in contrast to an evolving concept of basic human rights in modern international relations.The anthology contains German government documents of 1943/44 based on the findings of various medical commissions, legal investigations, and interviews with the local population. It also includes eyewitness testimonies and Congressional Hearings of those who were present at the opening of the Vinnytsia mass graves, as well as selected articles written since this event. In retrospect, the articles are meant to convey the sense of the public’s reaction to this tragedy over the past fifty years. By focusing on the unpredictability of Stalin’s rule, this work also hints at the vulnerability of an individual caught in the cobweb of a totalitarian system of justice.

Аннотация: Ukraine is a young country which appeared on the map of Europe in 1991, Since independence was declared on August 24, 1991, our country has experienced a global transformation that has affected its economic, political, and administrative systems, and society as a whole. For two decades, Ukraine has been in the process of transforming from a typical Soviet republic info a democratic state with an active civil society. The planned economy model gave way to market regulation mechanisms. The changes have affected all spheres of life: the changing face of the cities and streets; new trends in business and the cultural environment; lifestyle has been transformed. But the most important and difficult change was the change in people’s minds. Ukrainians have become more active and open. They value their freedom. They are people who are creating their own future. If is this transformation which is the basis for the construction of a democratic state. Ukraine is a country with great economic, cultural, and scientific potential actively integrating into the world community and engaging in dialogue with international partners. This pertains not only to politics or economics, but to the cultural, sporting, educational and scientific spheres as well. Famous Ukrainians have been appearing in the international news with greater frequency. In 2012, Ukraine became one of the two hosts of Euro-2012, and this was not incidental, since Kyiv was among the cities to host the Olympic Games in 1980. Living up to the status of the host of such a prestigious sporting event as the European football championship is a great responsibility. Government, business and societal efforts came together to modernize infrastructure and upgrade the appearance of large cities and show the beauty of the Ukrainian land. Time changes and priorities change. In the dynamic world, a young Ukrainian state is trying to "catch the wave" of these changes while preserving national identity. Here, the monuments of history and culture are carefully preserved and folk traditions are honored. One of the main advantages of our country is the friendliness and hospitality of its people. And if Ukraine is still an unknown land for you, we suggest you begin your acquaintance with the country right now!
