Аннотация: HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY is a textbook in two volumes for medical students which gives a concise and comprehensive account of physiology in its contemporary state. The most important theoretical conceptions of the nature of the main physiological processes are discussed, and the facts underlying these conceptions presented. Bearing in mind that the book is intended for medical undergraduates, the authors considered it possible to dwell upon certain pathological data that would assist understanding of the importance of the various physiological processes occurring in the body. The first volume contains the following sections: General Principles and Basic Conceptions of Physiology; Blood; Circulation; Respiration; Digestion; Nutrition; Metabolism and Energy Exchange; Excretory Processes; Internal Secretion. The textbook was written by a group of eminent specialists with a vast experience in research and as teachers, under the editorship of the late Evgeni Babsky, Member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.Физиология человека представляет собой учебник в двух томах для студентов-медиков, которые дает краткий и всеобъемлющий отчет о своей физиологии в современном государстве. Обсуждаются наиболее важные теоретические представления о характере основных физиологических процессов, лежащих в основе этих фактов представлена концепция. Принимая во внимание, что эта книга предназначена для студентов, медицинский, авторы посчитали возможным остановиться на некоторых патологических данных, который будет способствовать пониманию важности различных физиологических процессах, происходящих в организме. Первый том содержит следующие разделы: общие принципы и основные концепции физиологии, кровь, тираж; дыхание; пищеварение, питание, метаболизма и энергетического обмена; выводные процессов; внутренней секреции. Этот учебник был написан группой видных специалистов, имеющих богатый опыт в области исследований и, как учителя, под редакцией покойного Евгения Babsky, член Украинской Академии Наук.

Each lab is designed to provide hands-on experience in applying physiological concepts, and requires active participation to carry out the procedures and collect data, as well as critical thinking skills to answer the questions at the end of each exercise. The manual is self-contained, so students can prepare for the laboratory exercises and quizzes without having to refer to the textbookWilliam Westwood has drawn the cover illustration for seven of the eight editions of Human Physiology, probably the longest association of a particular artist with the cover of a textbook. As the author, I am very grateful for this continuity, because Bill always manages the difficult task of capturing the dynamic nature of physiology. Although it may appear to represent an alien civilization on a distant world—one that is extremely busy, complex, and advanced—the stunning artwork on the cover of this book actually depicts a fraction of the ongoing regulatory activities that occur in almost all cells in the human body.The theme of the cover art for the eighth edition is physiological regulation at the cellular level. This area of physiology relates to how regulatory chemicals released from neurons (as neurotransmitters), endocrine glands (as hormones), and many tissues of the body (as paracrine regulators) influence the body cells.The study of the ways in which regulatory chemicals work—that is, of cellular transduction mechanisms— relates physiology to such associated fields as biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology, and medicine. At the center of the cover art is a blood capillary, shown leaving an adrenal gland and transporting red and white blood cells as well as two different types of hormones. Molecules of the hormone epinephrine (adrenalin), shown as orange spheres, leave the capillary and bind to a receptor protein in a target cell in the lower right.This causes dissociation of G-proteins (yellow hexagons) that move to the right in the picture and activate an enzyme in the cell membrane.The enzyme, in turn, catalyzes a reaction in which another regulatory molecule is produced (the grouping of red spheres). Meanwhile, steroid hormones such as cortisol (the flat, four-ringed orange structures) move out of the blood to the lower left of the art. Here, they pass through their target cell membrane and bind to cytoplasmic receptor proteins as they move into the cell nucleus. An axon terminal is shown releasing neurotransmitter molecules in the upper left of the art. In the top middle portion, two molecules of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine bind to a receptor protein, causing the protein to open a channel in the membrane. Through this open channel, sodium ions (spheres) enter the cell and potassium ions (triangles) leave.This represents the way that acetylcholine stimulates certain target cells. Don’t be discouraged by the terminology; you can’t fully understand the cover until you have mastered the material in this textbook. Even before you begin your studies, however, you can enjoy the sheer beauty of the art. If it makes you marvel at what awaits you in the study of physiology, it has served its purpose

Аннотация: Each time I revise this Textbook of Medical Physiology, I think that someday physiology will become a completely mature subject without change from year to year. However, this always proves to be far from the truth. Physiology is a vast discipline, and only now are we beginning to make inroads into many of its fundamental secrets. Most importantly, within the past few years many new techniques for learning cellular and molecular physiology have become available. Therefore, more and more can we present physiological principles in molecular and physical terms, rather than merely as a series of separate biological phenomena. This change we all welcome, but it is also a change that makes necessary the revision of virtually every chapter in this text with each new edition. The beauty of physiology is that it attempts to integrate the individual functions of all the body’s different cells and organs into a total functional whole, the human or animal body. Indeed, the life of the human being relies upon this total function, not on the functions of the single parts in isolation from the others. This brings us to another entirely different subject: How are the separate organs and systems controlled in a way that no one system overfunc-tions while others fail to provide their share? Fortunately, the body is endowed with a vast network of feedback mechanisms that account for the necessary balances, without which we would not be able to live. Physiologists call this high level of internal bodily control homeostasis. In disease conditions, more often than not the functional balances become seriously disturbed—that is, homeostasis becomes very poor. When the disturbance is too great, the total body can no longer live. Therefore, one of the principal goals of any medical physiology text is to explain and emphasize the effectiveness and beauty of the body’s homeostatic mechanisms, as well as to discuss their aberrant function in disease.
