It is expected to provide the high quality as well as the up-to-date knowledge in the field of medicine, knowing well that medical knowledge is constantly changing. Technologic explosion has made the present obstetric knowledge and practice significantly different compared to the past. Today, an obstetric student is expected to understand and interpret in addition to the fundamentals, Partographs (ch.12, 26, 34), Ultrasonographs (ch. 40), Fetal well-being in Pregnancy (ch. 11, 31) and in Labour (ch. 38), Counselling strategy (ch.10), Prenetal genetic diagnosis (ch. 11, 32), Psychological care (ch. 29) and also the legal and ethical issues related to these areas (ch. 39). Again the introduction of "core curricula" aims to impart the essential knowledge, skills and attitude within a limited time frame. Above all the author of this text (see the preface of the first edition) believed that, teaching and learning process should be free, easy and simple without any ambiguity or complexities. This sixth edition of D.C. Dutta’s widely acclaimed, comprehensive Text Book of Obstetrics has considered all the areas as discussed above.
