Анотація: In memoriam Eduard Lugovskoi and Russell Doolittle we are referring to several episodes of their life and work. Russell Doolittle an American biochemist and his friend and colleague Ukrainian scientist Eduard Lugovskoi, both studied fibrinogen structure and functions and finally united their efforts in the revealing of the new mechanism of intramolecular interactions of fibrin molecule through coiled-coil region. The results of their common work and discussions were included to the article “The fibrin Bβ125-135 site is involved in the lateral association of protofibrils”. Valuable part of the communication dedicated to the poetry of Eduard Lugovskoi that inspired both of scientists in work and life. We are providing some remembrance of their collaboration, their letters sent to each other, fragments of handwriting and common photo of Russell Doolittle and Eduard Lugovskoi

Анотація: Modern biochemistry and molecular biology would be impossible without discoveries in related fields of science. This paper aims to outline briefly the main stages of scientific activity of a Nobel Prize winner 1902 – German chemist Hermann Emil Fischer, one of the leading chemists of all times. Emil Fischer was a brilliant multifaceted scientist who left his mark in organic chemistry, physiology, medicine, gave impetus to the development of biochemistry. His insights into the structures of sugars, enzymes, proteins, and purines have become a launching pad for the further development of biochemistry and molecular biology. His contribution to the natural sciences was immense; some chemical reactions and concepts were named after him. This prominent scientist was honored with a number of awards

Анотація: On March 21-22, 2019 the regular annual young scientists Conference “Modern Aspects of Biochemistry and Biotechnology” was successfully held in Palladin Institute of Biochemistry. The Conference was organized by the Young Scientists Council of Palladin Institute of Biochemistry with the support of ALT Ukraine Ltd –advanced laboratory technologies Company. Young scientists from Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Chernivtsi, Ternopil, Poltava took part in the Conference as oral speakers. The scientific program of the Conference included the following sections: Translational Studies; Biochemistry; Biotechnology; Molecular Biology; Medical Biochemistry; Biochemical mechanisms of resistance to adverse environmental conditions. The workshops devoted to computer analysis of biological images; methods of biological experimental data statistical analysis; quantitative polymerase chain reaction for gene expression estimation; spectrofluorometry as a rainbow force for biochemists service were organized to broaden the research skills of young scientists. Conference was opened by the new section ‘Translational Studies’. So many reports were focused on the efforts to build on basic scientific research to create new therapies, medical procedures, or diagnostics. The members of Scientific Committee specially acknowledged those young scientists who presented data about long way from idea, it’s in vitro approval to the in vivo testing and application. The honorary awards for the best oral presentation were given to Anna Myronova (“CRISPRa-mediated direct cardiac reprogramming of embryonic rat fibroblasts”), Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, NAS of Ukraine, Kyiv; Yevgen Stohnii (“Epitope determination of novel fibrinogen-specific antibody by limited proteolysis”), Palladin Institute of Biochemistry, NAS of Ukraine, Kyiv; Anton Tkachenko (“Fascin is upregulated in nasal mucosa in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps”), Kharkiv National Medical University, Kharkiv. The honourable mention prizes for interesting scientific reports were presented to Vira Borshchovetska (Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, Chernivtsi), Olga Revka and Valerija Zhovannyk (Palladin Institute of Biochemistry, Kyiv), Maxym Skrypnyk (Ukrainian medical stomatological academy, Poltava). The meeting was held in a creative and friendly atmosphere with constructive and helpful discussions. The abstracts of the oral presentations of participants will be published in the “Ukrainian Biochemical Journal”

Анотація: Objective – before and after the treatment to determine the functional state of the liver, serum levels of enzymes and biochemical indices in syphilis patients with viral hepatites B and C. The results of the study are based on the data from a comprehensive examination of 35 patients with syphilis alone and 127 patients with syphilis co-infected with viral hepatites B and C before and after treatment. Test methods: hepatology, rheogeopathography, enzyme content and biochemical parameters determined in the serum. According to the results of radionuclide hepatology it has been established that disorders of the functional capacity of the liver already occur in the early stages of the disease. The most significant disorders have been in the patients with the prescription of infection for more than 12 months and in the patients co-infected with viral hepatites B and C. A disorder of pigment metabolism and increased activity of transaminases have been revealed in early latent syphilis. In co-infection with viral hepatites B and C an increase in total bilirubin, Lactate dehydrogenase, Alanine transaminase, Aspartate aminotransferase and albumin has been revealed. Dysproteinemia has been revealed in patients with early latent syphilis co-infected with hepatitis C. Patients with early latent syphilis treated with immunomodulators tend to normalize these indices. In patients with syphilis a disorder of the functional state of the liver have been revealed already at an early stage of the disease. The most pronounced disorder of biochemical parameters and activity of liver enzymes are observed in syphilis patients with viral hepatites B and C, as well as in patients with early latent syphilis only with the prescription of the infection for more than 12 months; in such a case it is advisable to use drugs affecting the immune system
