Анотація: Medical knowledge is constantly changing. As new information becomes available, changes in treatment, procedures, equipment and the use of drugs become necessary. The authors and the publishers have, as far as it is possible, taken care to ensure that the information given in this text is accurate and up to date. However, readers are strongly advised to confirm that the information, especially with regard to drug usage, complies with the latest legislation and standards of practice. Pediatrics has undergone major changes since the release of last edition of this book. At last, the art and science of caring for children is now recognized as a separate subject in the undergraduate medical curriculum all over India. Besides, the discipline of Pediatrics has become broader, now encompassing the vital period of adolescence. At the Government level, a new national policy for child health has been charted. The challenge ranges from delivery of healthcare to children at their doorstep at the primary level to the most intensive care in a tertiary care setting.This has generated enormous pressures and increased responsibilities for those concerned with child health. In this edition fresh chapters have been added on adolescence, intensive care and integrated management of childhood illnesses. Besides, chapters on behavioral disorders, malignancies and neuromuscular diseases have been almost rewritten. Chapters on nutrition, fluid and electrolytes, central nervous system, and genetic and metabolic disorders have been thoroughly updated and reorganized. Rest of the contents is also suitably modified. The revised chapter on growth and development lists the complete CDC 2000 reference values of weight, height and body mass index for age and sex from birth to 20 years at monthly intervals. New sections have been added on micronutrient malnutrition, neonatal transport, management of tuberculosis and HIV. acute liver failure, bronchial asthma, arrhythmias, acute flaccid paralysis, seizure management and snakebite. While revising, authors have taken care to retain the original format, style and easy readability - stark features of the earlier editions. A major addition is the inclusion of color figures: especially to enliven the chapters on skin conditions and genetic disorders.
